On a cold, windy February morning on Shinnecock Bay, on the South Fork of Long Island, N.Y., Ricky Sea Smoke fished for clams from the back of his 24-foot boat. The fisherman, whose real name is Rick Stevens, expertly sorted through haul after haul as they were dumped onto the sorting rack. Among the usual littlenecks and cherrystones were delicacies that would make chefs swoon: sweet, plump razor clams; vermilion-fleshed blood clams; and dainty limpets (also known as slipper snails) with their inimitable saline, buttery flavor. Depending on the season, fishers like Mr. Stevens can bring in even more treasures, like scallops, squid, blue crabs, striped bass, mackerel and skate. But almost none of them are available locally.

Now, the Supreme Court will consider whether the prosecutors’ interpretation of the law can be used against the rioters and whether the convictions already secured will stick. The charge at issue in the Supreme Court case stems from a law Congress enacted in response to a series of corporate accounting scandals, including the 2001 Enron debacle. The case before the Supreme Court involves only that last charge. All three defendants appealed to the Supreme Court, but the justices granted only Fischer’s case. In a filing last week at the Supreme Court in Trump’s immunity case, Smith argued the obstruction charge should stick against Trump even if Fischer wins.

Still, in an earlier case involving a different provision of the law, the Supreme Court said it should be tethered to its original purpose. Mr. Fischer is accused of entering the Capitol around 3:24 p.m. on Jan. 6, 2021, with the counting of electoral ballots having been suspended after the initial assault. But the question for the justices is legal, not factual: Does the 2002 law cover what Mr. Fischer is accused of? Indeed, the judges in the majority in an appeals court ruling against Mr. Fischer could not agree on just what the word meant. By a 5-to-4 vote, the Supreme Court agreed.

Thirteen years ago, a poor fisherman in a small Turkish village was retrieving his net from a lake when he heard a noise behind him and turned to find a majestic being standing on the bow of his rowboat. Gleaming white feathers covered its head, neck and chest, yielding to black plumes on its wings. It stood atop skinny orange legs that nearly matched the color of its long, pointy beak. The fisherman, Adem Yilmaz, recognized it as one of the white storks that had long summered in the village, he recalled, but he had never seen one so close, much less hosted one on his boat. Wondering if it was hungry, he tossed it a fish, which the bird devoured.

I dreamed of overwater bungalows in places like the Maldives but dreaded the long flight there. And I believed the best place to create that experience would be in an overwater bungalow — the epitome of a luxury tropical vacation. Levente Bodo/Getty ImagesThere's a reason overwater bungalows aren't as popular in the CaribbeanOverwater bungalow resorts are more than 55 years old. And Ra'iātea's calm waters made it the ideal place for an overwater bungalow, Kelley said. My first overwater bungalow stay reminded me I don't need to hop on an all-day flight to experience the accommodation.

Lower courts used the decision to uphold a 2020 National Marine Fisheries Service rule that herring fishermen pay for monitors who track their fish intake. A group of commercial fishermen appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. They lost in the lower courts, which relied on the Chevron decision to sustain the regulation. The Supreme Court itself hasn't invoked the Chevron decision since Trump's justices began arriving on the court in 2017, the first year of the Republican's administration. ___Follow the AP's coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court at https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (AP) — As the U.S. races to build offshore wind power projects, transforming coastlines from Maine to South Carolina, much remains unknown about how the facilities could affect the environment. So far, four offshore wind projects have been approved by the federal government for the U.S. East Coast, according to the American Clean Power Association. The company is a Danish wind power business that will build two of the three offshore projects approved for New Jersey. Numerous others have been proposed, and the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management plans to review at least 16 offshore wind projects by 2025. The federal government has endorsed — but not required — compensation to the fishing industry for negative effects from offshore wind.

An angler caught a 9-foot-long "monster" catfish in an Italian river after a 40-minute battle. The enormous wels catfish is likely "world record" breaking in length. It was the new world record catfish," Biancardi wrote on his fishing team's Madcat's blog. Describing the battle to land the amazing creature, Biancardi wrote on Madcat's website, "I calmly managed to fight what I felt to be a prehistoric fish." This fish will beat the International Game Fish Association's current wels catfish length record by 1.57 inches if confirmed by the association.

Heinz gave Elvis Francois another $9,900 this week on top of the almost $15,000 it donated in April. Francois survived weeks at sea on ketchup in January and Heinz wanted to help him get a new boat. The company paid Elvis Francois $26,761 East Caribbean dollars ($9,900) on Tuesday so he could complete work on his boat. Elvis Francois plans to paint a Heinz bottle on his new boat. A Heinz representative told Insider: "We're happy that Elvis is safely able to get back on water."
Heinz appealed to the internet to find a fisherman who survived 24 days at sea on ketchup. Heinz said the "ketchup boat guy" preferred cash so he could get a new boat more quickly. The company offered to give fisherman Elvis Francois a new boat complete with a navigation system after learning he'd survived 24 days lost at sea on just ketchup and seasonings. Francois told Insider he could only afford to buy a small used boat and engines as the money Heinz gave him "wasn't enough" for a sailboat. He spent EC$18,000 on a small boat and EC$20,000 on two motors.

A TikTok video showed a fishing boat off the coast of Louisiana surrounded by feasting sharks. One of the fisherman told Storyful he'd "never seen anything like it." The frantic sharks appeared to be eating a pod of small fish that could be seen in the water. At some points in the video, small fish can be seen frantically swimming below the surface in the midst of the sharks, which were even causing water to splash up onto the boat. Some of the sharks most commonly found along the coastlines include bull, thresher, hammerhead, nurse, and blacktip, among others.
A video shows a rare example of wild dolphins collaborating with humans to fish in a small lagoon in Brazil. The dolphins learned how to tell the humans exactly when to throw their nets to catch the most fish. The fishers need the dolphins to know when to cast their netsFishermen toss these circular nets to catch the fish in the water. After the net is cast, the dolphins can catch stray fish or pick a few fish out of the net. The Laguna dolphins are about 13% more likely to reach old age, per the study.

For more than 70 days this summer, a marine heatwave cooked the waters of the western Mediterranean. "We've been witnessing marine heatwaves during the last 20 years," said Garrabou, who's also coordinator of the T-MEDNet marine monitoring network. A 2016 marine heatwave along Chile's southern coast caused huge algae blooms that wiped out fish farms and cost the aquaculture industry some $800 million, said scientist Kathryn Smith with the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. As the world warms, marine heatwaves are expected to become more frequent, according to the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Though economists have yet to account fully for the impacts of marine heatwaves, recent experience has many concerned.
A Tanzanian passenger plane crashed into Lake Victoria on Sunday, killing 19 people on board. Majaliwa Jackson, the fisherman, was among the first people at the site of the Precision Air plane crash in Tanzania's Lake Victoria on Sunday. "He directed me to break the window screen," Jackson told the BBC. "He pointed out the cockpit emergency door to me," Jackson told the BBC. The plane took off from Tanzania's commercial capital of Dar es Salaam on Sunday morning and was supposed to land in Bukoba when it instead plunged into Lake Victoria, Africa's largest freshwater lake.
